What Filacoste is
Filacoste (from filament + coste, Spanish for cost) is a site with four calculators and three guides about the cost of 3D printing. It came out of a very specific problem: almost everybody works out what a part costs by dividing the spool price by the grams, and that number stops halfway to the real cost.
Why it exists
The calculators that existed belonged to specific manufacturers, were English-only, or lived buried in somebody's blog. We wanted one that works the same with a Bambu Lab, a Creality, an Elegoo or a Prusa, that speaks Spanish, English, Italian and German, and that is built for quoting a client, not just for satisfying curiosity.
How the sums work
The formulas are out in the open and identical across the site: material, electricity, machine depreciation, a percentage of failed prints and your labour. Your chosen markup goes on top of that cost. The tables in the guides are worked out with those same formulas, so the site never contradicts itself. What we don't do
- No sign-up, no email, no account.
- Nothing gets uploaded. If you drop a G-code file, it is read inside your browser.
- No currency conversion. The currency selector only changes how amounts are formatted, and we say so where it matters.
- No invented official data. Printer wattages are estimated averages and filament prices are brackets, not price lists.
What it's built with
HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with no external services: no analytics, no third-party scripts, no calls to any server while you use the tools. The typefaces are Inter and Space Grotesk, both under the SIL Open Font License 1.1; the full licence travels alongside the font files on this very site.
How it pays for itself
The site is free and is funded by advertising. The ad slots are placed so that they never cover the tool and never open before you have finished what you were doing.
Mistakes and suggestions
If a number doesn't add up, if your printer is missing from the list or if there is a tool you wish existed, write to us from the contact page. Calculation fixes come before everything else.
